Murray Downs Processing: A Triumph for Almond Growers
Three years ago, Murray Downs, a leading Australian almond grower, marked a significant milestone with the establishment of a state-of-the-art processing factory, embracing Almond Packaging Automation. Initially unplanned, this facility was specifically built to accommodate the high export demands of almond growers, marking a substantial leap forward in the industry.
As the demand for exports surged, the need for advanced automation became increasingly clear. Murray Downs required a solution that could handle large-scale production efficiently while maintaining high standards of quality and reliability.
After extensive industry research, Murray Downs’ Lead Engineer selected Ehcolo, a trusted supplier renowned for its high performing, low maintenance end-of-line packaging machinery that is designed for high impact production environments. Partnering with Perfect Automation, the exclusive distributor of Ehcolo equipment, the project included the PM900 Palletiser and HM80 Stretch Hooder—both engineered to enhance efficiency, reliability, and sustainability.
Despite tight deadlines, Ehcolo and Perfect Automation successfully delivered and installed the system on schedule and within budget, reinforcing their reputation as industry leaders in automation. This seamless integration has optimised Murray Downs’ export operations, ensuring a streamlined, scalable, and cost-effective distribution process.
Key Equipment and Benefits
The PM900 Palletiser, distinguished by its advanced robotic pick-and-place gripper has the capability to overlap bags or place them side by side. Side pushers then consolidate all bags into a tight pallet layer that fits securely within the pallet, achieving speeds of up to 1,000 bags per hour. Additionally, the PM900 is equipped with a combination of servo converters and servomotors, enabling precise and smooth start/stop operations. Outfitted with Kinetic Energy Recovery technology, this machine allows for the recovery and re-use of all braking energy. This innovative feature can lead to substantial cost savings of up to 15 to 20% in comparison to other Palletisers.
The HM80 Stretch Hooder operates with minimal noise and integrates seamlessly into existing processing infrastructure, ensuring high-quality packaging and an efficient workflow. Also equipped with servo-controlled technology, this machine is renowned for being one of the most reliable film opening systems currently available. Capable of reaching speeds of up to 80 pallets per hour, the HM80 Stretch Hooder delivers unparalleled reliability and exceptional durability. One of its standout features is the use of flat film instead of traditional gusset film, enhancing durability when handling various crosswind and sticky films. This innovative design reduces film changeover time by up to 30%, significantly boosting overall productivity and performance.
The seamless integration of the PM900 Palletiser and HM80 Stretch Hooder into the processing line has ensured that operational efficiencies and demand fulfillment have excelled. This has not only optimised productivity but also reinforced Murray Downs’ commitment to sustainability and innovation.
By leveraging cutting-edge packaging equipment, Murray Downs has solidified its position at the forefront of almond processing innovation. The seamless integration of advanced technology has empowered the company to meet increasing global demands while upholding exceptional standards of efficiency and sustainability. With expert knowledge and continued technology advancements, Perfect Automation and Ehcolo continue to support Murray Downs’ growth and expansion.
Murray Downs Journey:
- How was the installation experience?
Installation went smoothly, with a very tight deadline and in a site still under construction. Seamless online support from the tech team.
- Are there future automation plans for Murray Downs?
Not on the immediate horizon
- Can you share any feedback from the team regarding the new system?
As with any new installation and user team, it took some time to get people trained and the system settled. Murray Downs is into its second season and the palletiser and hooder are working to expectations.
- What specific benefits have you observed from the integration of the HM80 Stretch Hooder?
Stretch Hooder integrates well with the autonomous forklifts used on-site. The forklifts sensors will detect any material in front of them and the stretch hooder does not create these types of problems (that you might experience with a wrap system).
- What challenges did you face during the implementation, if any, and how were they overcome?
We needed a good internet connection to allow the Europe based tech team to access the equipment during set up and commissioning. Once available it worked really well.
